About FieldPaper

A reference site covering academic writing, citation formats and research paper structure for students across Canada.

Last updated: May 25, 2026

What this site covers

FieldPaper publishes structured guides on the practical aspects of academic writing. The articles focus on areas where students consistently encounter difficulty: organizing a research paper from abstract to conclusion, choosing and applying citation styles correctly, and reviewing a completed draft before submission.

The content draws on publicly available documentation from style manuals, university writing centres and academic publishing guidelines. No original research is presented here — the goal is to make existing authoritative guidance more accessible and applicable to specific writing situations.

Scope and audience

The site is written primarily for students at Canadian universities and colleges. Where institutional practices vary — and they do, particularly around citation style preferences by faculty — the articles note this and link to authoritative sources for each style.

The three citation systems covered in detail are APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition and Chicago 17th edition (both Notes–Bibliography and Author–Date systems). Coverage of additional styles may be added over time.

Content standards

Articles do not invent statistics, fabricate studies or cite organizations that do not exist. When exact data is unavailable or varies by institution, the text uses neutral language without inventing figures. External links point to primary sources: APA Style, MLA Style Center, the Chicago Manual of Style and university writing centres at Canadian institutions.
